What does your smile say about you?

Did you know that a smile has a powerful effect on relationships, image and mood? Here are some interesting scientific facts that reveal what can happen whenever you flash your pearly whites.

A smile changes the way people see you

In one study two groups of people were given different pictures of the same person (one smiling, the other with no expression). Those who saw the smiling picture viewed the person as reliable, trustworthy, sincere, relaxed and friendly. Those who saw the expressionless picture viewed the person as aggressive and strict.

A smile is the best motivator

2011 findings made by the Face Research Laboratory at Scotland’s University of Aberdeen and published in the journal Neuropsychologia found that smiles activate the parts of the brain that process rewards. This changes depending on whether an experience is found pleasant or fulfilling, and make people more receptive to doing what is asked.

A smile makes you more attractive

The Face Research Laboratory study also asked subjects to rate smiling and attractiveness. They found that both men and women were drawn to images of people who had a nice smile, and were more likely to start a conversation or approach them in a room.
A smile can affect your professional and social image

A smile can help you become more successful

A survey conducted by American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found that 96% think a beautiful smile makes a person more appealing, and 74% think that an unattractive smile can affect career and image. It may be related to other studies that showed that people think a smile – like good skin, or a well-tailored suit, help project an image of success, poise and beauty.
