Oily scalp is a condition that is caused by excess sebum, natural oil that is produced by the skin’s sebaceous gland that results in greasy hair. The causes of excess sebum which is natural oil from the scalp include genes, hormonal imbalances, humidity, your diet, or a disease called seborrheic dermatitis, which also causes scaly patches and will need to be managed with the help of a dermatologist. If your oily scalp condition is mild, it is believed that to reduce the oiliness is not to use shampoo daily. This is because shampoo has a cleansing agent that cleans the scalp and leaves it dry which the sebum will secrete excess sebum causing the hair to be more oily. If the hair gets uncontrollably oily or one feel uncomfortable, use a dry shampoo or use baby powder.

One can try creams or medicated shampoos. Shampoos that contain certain ingredients such as coal tar, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide or salicylic acid are recommended for oily scalp as they help to slow down the death and regeneration of skin cells on your scalp. They also help to control the oiliness caused by fungi and minimize inflammation and itching.
