Dr. Phua tells us about her top in-clinic treatment for body contouring – Cryolipolysis or fat freezing:
“I use the LIPOCRYO® cryolipolysis system which is a non-surgical treatment that selectively targets subcutaneous fat in problem areas such as the love handles, saddle bags (hip area), arms and thighs to reduce fat by lowering the temperature under a vacuum to 3 Degrees Celsius to freeze the fat cells (adipocytes), hence allowing the body’s natural mechanisms to eliminate the fat cells naturally.”
What are the results? Is there any pain?
“Up to 20 per cent of fat can be lost in one session, as measured with ultrasound. This process can be repeated in 4-6 weeks if necessary with good results. There is some transient redness of the area for a few hours and there may be some bruising for a day or two. Some people report a transient aching sensation, i.e. like a muscle ache in their abdomen. There is no limitation of any activities afterwards and patients can resume a normal lifestyle.”
How many follow up treatments are required?
Most patients require 2-3 sessions, spaced at 4-6 weeks apart, and this is suitable for most people who have soft fat (subcutaneous) that they can pinch between their finger tips of more than 2.5 cm.
Dr. Phua stresses the importance of a healthy lifestyle:
“Ideally one should have a healthy lifestyle and incorporate regular exercise and a healthy diet, alongside sufficient sleep (7 hours or more) to regulate the body’s metabolism. In conjunction with a moderately low fat diet, the results [of LIPOCRYO®] are very good. It is not a weight loss treatment per se but it marries weight management as part of a body contouring programme. The treatment is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, or those with any autoimmune conditions.”
“As a plastic surgeon, Liposuction is still one of the best treatments available for patients who desire dramatic improvement in body contour with one single treatment. We use the latest Vaser Liposelection techniquewhich is a third generation ultrasound assisted liposuction device. It melts away the fat using an ultrasound probe before the fat is sucked away. It leads to much less bruising, pain and swelling as compared to conventional liposuction. It can be performed on the arms, abdomen and thighs safely.”
What results should be expected after this treatment?
“Immediately, patients should still expect some bruising and swelling which may take 1-2 weeks to resolve completely. However, most patients can resume normal activities after 1-3 days. There is slight discomfort post surgery. However, the discomfort is more than adequately controlled using oral painkillers.
Usually only one treatment is necessary. It is most suitable for patients with fat deposits but without massive amounts of loose skin. For patients with massive amounts of loose skin, excisional procedures like tummy-tuck surgery is still the treatment of choice.”
Dr. Kuek explains that treatments much be customized for each patient.
To slim and contour the body there are various options available. These range from non-invasive treatments to liposculpture plastic surgery. Non-invasive treatments are a slower process but liposculpture is usually be done in one treatment. It is important that the problems concerning each patient are evaluated first in order to choose the best solution for that individual.
Some of the non-invasive treatments available include LipoCryo therapy, which combines vacuum and specifically controlled-cooling technology to reduce localised fat bulges, and VelaShape, a body-shaping and firming treatment which works to reduce cellulite and slim areas, particularly around the stomach, hips, and thighs. The VelaShape machine combines four different technologies – infrared, radio frequency, pulsed vacuum and rolling lymphatic massage, that help to improve skin texture and also reduce the overall volume of the treated area. Individuals can also choose from special packages that will combine different treatments to achieve their specific aims.
Will there be any pain during the treatment?
The treatments are all very safe, though some pulling, stretching or heating sensations can be expected during the process. There are no significant side effects to the treatments. Liposculpture is done under anaesthetic. Results vary with each patient, another reason why individual consultation is essential before any procedure to achieve the best effect.
